For many years my work has played back and forth between painting and sculpture. The mixed media paintings are something in between – hybrids.
All involved ideas of material presence, process, reflected color, transparency and physicality without volume. The paintings have highly textured surfaces that are built up in several layers with acrylic modeling paste. Color is applied with acrylic paint and gouache. The entire surface is sanded down to expose the underneath layers and the process is repeated until a subtle relief is achieved. With each sanding, transparent layers of gouache become embedded in the surface and give richness to the color. The process allows color to become part of each layer instead of only painting it on the final surface. Colors and patterns come from several sources, as do the shapes: natural materials, textiles, Tantric diagrams and Indian miniatures.
