The site-specific work began to change my awareness of scale and the physical space a painting occupies. This way of working altered my ideas of process, material presence, changing light, color, especially reflected color, layering, transparency and physicality without volume. Ideas that have long influenced everything I do as an artist. In later years my work has played back and forth between painting and sculpture to satisfy my need for both color and physical surface. I consider the mixed-media wall constructions neither painting nor sculpture but something in between. They explore this vacillating relationship by using structure as a vehicle to embed color and to investigate how objects can act as accumulators and directors of light.
